Nuestra Directora Ejecutiva estaba en su escritorio cuando recibió una llamada telefónica: ¡el gobernador de Wisconsin, Tony Evers, estaba interesado en visitar CORE El Centro! Había oído hablar de nosotros a través de una Directora Adjunta, Vanessa Llanas, en su oficina de Milwaukee, y quería conocer nuestra organización personalmente.
Dos días después, un grupo de líderes de CORE El Centro estaba ofreciéndole al Gobernador Evers un recorrido de nuestras instalaciones en la calle Bruce, poniéndolo al tanto acerca de varios de nuestros programas. Después del recorrido el grupo tuvo la oportunidad de conversar y hacer preguntas sobre oportunidades de financiación, y compartir nuestra valiosa visión acerca de la vida de las personas que servimos y las maneras en que el estado puede apoyar.
Our Executive Director was at her desk when she got a phone call: the governor of Wisconsin, Tony Evers, was interested in visiting CORE El Centro! He had heard about us from Deputy Director, Vanessa Llanas in his Milwaukee Office and wanted to see firsthand.
Two days later a group of CORE El Centro leaders was on site walking Gov. Evers through our Bruce Street facility and catch him up on various programs. After the tour, the group had a chance to sit down for a chat to ask questions about funding opportunities and to share our valuable insight into the lives of the people we serve and the ways that the state can support.

The visit of the Governor was important as he got to learn about CORE and its importance in the community. I feel that he was intrigued, and I loved that he quickly thought of other potential grants that CORE should apply for. I felt it was important to let him know that, through our work, we are supporting the population that does not have a voice to advocate for their rights. The visit from Governor Tony Evers was very powerful. His compassionate and open stance allowed for honest dialogue. CORE El Centro's staff was able to speak about the incredible impact of the pandemic on both our clients and our organization. We shared that the need for CORE El Centro's services has grown so much in the past two years and will continue to grow because so many people are struggling with the traumatic effects of the pandemic. Since our services address the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of an individual we know our services assist people in their healing process. Sentí que era importante decirle quien es el grupo de Mujeres con poder y nuestro trabajo como promotores de salud en la comunidad desde que iniciamos con nuestro primer programa de reciclaje. Estamos actualmente trabajando con el programa del Medical College y en equipo con el Departamento de Policía del Distrito 2 haciendo caminatas, con el Capitán, pedidas por la comunidad, creando confianza y credibilidad entre los residentes y la policía. Es una especie de puente para una mejor comunicación también. Le hicimos saber al gobernador que trabajamos con el programa de Reckless Driving y lo importante que es en nuestra comunidad tener una mejor educación vial y como estos programas han impactado benefiosamente a muchas familias.
Esperamos que escuchando el señor Gobernado todo el trabajo que realizamos Mujeres proporcione más recursos para el lado sur de Milwaukee y apoye a las organizaciones que hacen posible que los programas se efectúen.

I felt it was important to tell him who the Mujeres con Poder group is and about our work as health promoters in the community since we started with our first recycling program. We are currently working with the Medical College program teaming up with the District 2 Police Department doing walkabouts with the Captain requested by the community, building trust and credibility between the residents and the police. It is as a sort of bridge for better communication and to let them know that we work with the Reckless Driven program and how important it is in our community to have better driver's education and how these programs have impacted many families in a positive way. We hope that by listening to all the work that we do, the Governor will provide more resources for the south side of Milwaukee and support the organizations that make it possible for the programs to take place.
