A Joint Project of CORE/El Centro and Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic
Moving Toward a Healthier Community Through Health Justice and Community Empowerment
Mission:
Proyecto Salud, a joint project of CORE/El Centro and Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic, has been working in the Latino community of Milwaukee since 2006. Our mission is to create new avenues for social change and foster a community that embraces spiritual, mental and physical health. Working with an ecological approach to public health, our philosophy is one of collaboration and civic capacity building. We work to create avenues to shift the paradigm of 'power over' to 'power with' and 'power within'. The project addresses social determinants of health by taking into account neighborhood contexts, immigrant concerns, and other systemic and institutional factors that influence health.

What we do:
- Education for Action: Proyecto Salud provides education that takes into consideration what the learner already knows and gives him or her tools to act on what was learned. This type of education stresses the need for bi-directional exchange of knowledge, as opposed to the tradtional model where information is handed down from the teacher to the student.
- Civic Capacity Building: Proyecto Salud trains health promoters and supports their community project development and implementation. These projects expand social networks in order to increase opportunities for community members to live healthy lives.
- Tackle Social Determinants of Health through Action and Policy: As one of the founders of the Milwaukee Latino Health Coaltion, Proyecto Salud is committed to improving health outcomes in our community through tackling social determinants of health.
