With nearly 30% of Latinos obese and 64.5% overweight nationwide, Sarah Khan, MS, MPH, PhD, an assistant scientist in the department of Family Medicine's Integrative Medicine Program, is leading a public health research project to document the nutritional environment in one South Milwaukee neighborhood. Partnered with CORE/El Centro and Walker's Point Community Health Clinic, the project focuses on collected data from 225 patients and evaluates the avaliability and price of fresh and packed foods in the zip code 53204. Assisting her is Sephanie Calloway, MS from CORE/ EL Centro. Commissioner of Health, Bevan K. Baker, launched the annual National Public Helath Week Campaign and recognized Proyecto Salud, a joint project of CORE/El Centro and Aurora Walker's Point Community Clinic, with the Milwaukee Health Department commissioner's Community Award of Excellence 2010 for their outstanding contributions toward protecting and improving the health of Latino residents. "The Chicago Mexican consulate developed a new collaboration called Ventanilla de Salud, or health window, with CORE/El Centro and Aurora's Walker's Point Community Health Clinic in which basic health checks and referrals to community centers are done from a van. The Ventanilla program was devloped by the Health Initiative of the Americas, a research and advocacy center at the School of Public Health at University of California, focusing on migrant health issues. Jayne Ader is the co-founder and co-executive director of CORE/El Centro and Melinda Hughes is the Program Director for the Healing Center. The two organizations offer integrated therapies such as counseling, massage and reiki to survivors of sexual assault and trauma. Kathy, who asked us not to use her last name, is a survivor of childhood sexual abuse who has participated in a number of therapies at the HealingCenter.
