History

CORE/El Centro was founded in January of 2002 by Jayne Ader and Madeline Gianforte, two women who believe passionately that the most effective healing happens when natural healing modalities are integrated with traditional medical practices.

Each is a natural healing practitioner and has a profound respect for the healing that has occurred in their own lives through natural healing practices.  They continue to believe that ALL people should have access to holistic healing and should not be denied access due to culture barriers or a lack of funds

Jayne Ader and Madeline Gianforte spent a year networking and with the assistance and direction of the local Latino community leaders, CORE/El Centro was born.

So compelling was the articulation of their dream that they were able to gain the support of the wider Latino community and attract the start-up funds and personnel needed to open the center.

After securing a location on the fourth floor of the Esperanza Unida Building in Milwaukee, they invited the Madison Street Clinic, a free clinic for the uninsured and underserved, to re-locate to the same space. The clinic responded to the invitation and is now known as the Walker’s Point Community Clinic.

In 2004, The Healing Center, a program designed for those affected by sexual assault moved to the 4th floor of the same building. Together the Healing Center, Walker’s Point Community Clinic and CORE/El Centro, in the heart of Milwaukee’s Hispanic community, form a Healing Collective and collaborate for the health and well-being of the Milwaukee community.

In 2007, a program committee articulated the eight programs that have organically evolved in five years: Integrative Health, Community Health and Fitness, Special Needs, Trauma and Recovery, Children’s Wellness, Thriving with Cancer, Leadership Development and Outreach Education. Combining all these programs, CORE/El Centro serves approximately 1500 clients and provides on the average 7,000 one-on-one service hours each year (an increase from 100 in 2002).
